Our Program for 2019
Rocketman
"Rocketman is an epic musical fantasy about the incredible human story of Elton John’s breakthrough years.
The film follows the fantastical journey of transformation from shy piano prodigy Reginald Dwight into international superstar Elton John. This inspirational story – set to Elton John’s most beloved songs and performed by star Taron Egerton – tells the universally relatable story of how a small-town boy became one of the most iconic figures in pop culture. Rocketman also stars Jamie Bell as Elton’s longtime lyricist and writing partner Bernie Taupin, Richard Madden as Elton’s first manager, John Reid, and Bryce Dallas Howard as Elton’s mother Sheila Farebrother." ~ Inside Out Toronto |
Sex, Sin & 69
We are pleased to be co-hosting Egale's national tour of Sex, Sin & 69!
"The Sex, Sin & 69 Documentary is a 80-minute historical, retrospective film about the 1969 legislation to ‘decriminalize’ homosexuality. Told through contemporary voices including queer academics, historians, activists, educators, artists, and community builders, the film attempts to challenge our understanding of queer history by shining a light on widely adopted misconceptions surrounding decriminalization. The perspectives highlighted throughout the film lend it the contemporary relevance required to resonate with a modern audience largely removed from ‘decrim’ and historical queer Canada. In fact, this distance from the factual record of queer Canada provides a critical story driver in the film: calling into question dominant discourses about the significance of decriminalization. A Normal Girl
|
"To Be Out Here" details the rich lives of rural transgender folks in Canada's far north and showcases the stunning landscape of the Yukon. Contrary to popular belief, the film subjects find the Yukon welcoming and accepting of their identities. We meet members of the only transgender support group in the territory, All Genders Yukon, which unites the diverse group, and who range in age from five to 55. Their gender identities are as varied as their personalities, from a little princess and gender retiree, to a two-spirit man and a non-binary hockey player.
Emily McCarty is a freelance journalist and documentarian based out of B.C. and Washington state. She has produced video for the New York Times, Huffington Post, and independent films. She focuses on equity and inclusion. |
"A Normal Girl brings to light the widely unknown struggles of intersex people, through the story of intersex activist Pidgeon Pagonis."

Killing Patient Zero
"After the Stonewall riots and at the height of the gay liberation movement in America, an entire generation were busy celebrating their newfound emancipation, unaware of an impending epidemic. A disease that seemed determined to wipe out an entire generation of gay men, was largely ignored by politicians and the mainstream media.
Gaetan Dugas was a French-Canadian flight attendant, who offered to help early scientific research into the origins of AIDS. An unfortunate series of events followed and he would be villified as Patient Zero, the man who gave us AIDS." ~Fadoo Productions |
Wal-aks: Coming Out as 2-Spirit
Director: Dustin McGladrey
5 min "Wal-aks Keane Tait, who leads Nisga’a cultural dance groups, talks with Dustin McGladrey about his devotion to his culture, making things work, the piercings that honour his 2-spiritness and his identity as a 2-spirit Nisga'a person. McGladrey also directs the short video.
“It gives me much pride watching the film. Keane is my language teacher and dance leader, and learning from a 2-spirit human gives me the opportunity to learn from someone whose perspective isn’t coming from a completely western colonial worldview.” " ~Windspeaker.com |
